Antique
Japanese Antler Netsuke Shishi
Sitting Lion
Signature: unsigned. Circa: early 20th Century H. 1.75 in.(4.5cm), W.
1.4 in.(3.5cm), D. 0.7 in.(1.8cm) Condition:
very good! A
proportioned and compact antler netsuke in it's fully realized form without extraneous
projections. This Shishi is expressive, with its swirling and trembling forms
cut with fluidity and spontaneity, his jaws agape and tongue visible, spiraling
tail, whiskers, eyebrows, gripping claws and upturned eyes has the qualities of
an imploring pet. When held
in the hand, the tactile netsuke reveals a great deal of charm as it is turned
round. Spiral patterns on the body echo the curvilinear details in the head and
tail where fine carving brings out the chunky fur. Traveled through time, the
overall sense of solidity is most pleasing.
