Quan
Yin is a radiant deity who can take either male or female form. In China, Quan
Yin is synonymous with bodhisattva Avolokiteshvara and is experienced as the essence
of mercy and compassion, the one that hears the cries of all beings.
Distinctive
features mark this antique Chinese marble statue from the Wei or Song periods
(4th and 5th CE): Note the elongated eyes, the widenose, the plump well nourished
face and the mysterious luminous smile. The passage of time and worship are beautifully
reflected here, in details and ornaments that are nearly worn smooth. This
statue would have been in a temple or perhaps the private courtyard gardens of
a high-status dignitary. It is an exceptional piece deeply endowed with history
and the beatific qualities of this deeply compassionate deity. (SD)
