In this wonderfully carved netsuke, two relaxed Tengu sit across from each other playing a game of go. Passing the time as temple guardians, their bodies are immaculately sculpted with character and precision: long smooth noses, angel like wings folded behind them, stag horn in-lay go pieces, etched wood grain, laced up boots, curving contours, and eboshi (a court cap) sitting on top their heads. The one glares at the other, the other punching the table and looking away, a comically sad expression meeting the gaze of the viewer. The piece is signed by Meikosai, though little is known about this rare artist. A unique and beautifully done piece in very good condition.
