Japanese Okimono Netsuke Yamabushi
Traveling Priest with Mala
Unsigned. Circa: Meiji Period (1868-1912)
H 2.2 in.(5.6cm), W 1 in.(2.5cm), D
1 in.(2.5cm) Condition: Shoes restorations otherwise
very good. Lively
with movements, dimensional composition with a decisive simplicity, this forward
bending traveling priest is stumbling ahead on a cane, with prayer beads and rice
cake in hand, his face is radiating with joy of a faithful devotee, and the bold
and intricate lines succeeded in defining his character of strength and dignity.
Equally impressive is its small netsuke size, though without himotoshi. Despite
such fine artistry, the carver has left no signature for this Buddhist inspirational
piece.
