Fudo
Myoo is the immutable one, the Buddhist divinity of wisdom fire, He is the principle
deity of the Myoo, or great kings and is called upon as a valiant protector in
dangerous times. Fudo's sword in his right hand severs material connections. The
rope in his left hand is used to tie demons. This
early 20th century wooden statue is characterized by the classic single blade
rough-cut. That said, the power of the deity pours through in the rendering conveying
masculinity and power. The gaze communicates powerful single-pointed concentration.
There are intriguing remnants of the original gold plate present on the sword
and the base. The tension between the rough-hewn artistry and the power and presence
of the deity makes this statue highly compelling.
