Ox is the emblem of spring and agriculture. It's a symbol of fertility, strength, and dependability. As outlined in Mahayana Sutra, the cowherd and ox theme represents the Zen parable of spiritual evolution. Thus we can look forward to many auspicious changes in 2021, the year of the zodiac ox—the second of the 12-year cycle of animals.

This superb okimono of a recumbent ox is a delightful example of the outstanding Japanese bronzes after the Meiji period. With elegant simplicity, the ox's head is exceptionally rendered with finer details. Its sense of bone structure and tinted copper surface appeared lifelike. The figure's bulk and presence gathered in equipoise are exuding with confidence. Signed on the base, Hidemasa (Fujimaki), a well-known sculptor in Japan, his many works express a coexistence between humans and nature. In style, this ox is an artwork created in the earlier years in his career.
