This fine bronze statue depicts Padma Sambhava, the revered "Lotus-Born" Guru Rinpoche, who is regarded as the primary guru of Buddhism in Tibet and is revered in the Nyingma-pa School as a saint second only to the Historic Buddha. Gilded in lacquer and gold, Padma Sambhava is depicted in a natural ease position in deep contemplation. The khaṭvanga staff he holds on his forearm symbolizes the triumph of wisdom over illusion. In his left hand, Padma Sambhava holds a skull bowl containing the immortality elixir. The layers of garments are gilded with copper, and the radiance of gilded gold foliate falling around his figure adds to the statue's grandeur. Padma Sambhava wears a distinct lotus hat. His expression is solemn yet kind, and his round eyes seem intently fixed, while his broad lips are firmly set with curled furrows. Given that the missing Vajra scepter in his right hand adds to the intrigue of the statue, this Padma Sambhava is a beautifully crafted work of art that exudes reverence and power.
