The
stylization and simplicity of a tight-fitting sanghati, with
its emphasis on the Buddha's austere profile, an elongated
vocabulary of the face, joining of the bridge of the nose
to the eyebrows, and eyes downcast in meditation. The Chiang
Saen Buddha depicted here is seated in dhyanasana on a lotus
throne; his hands in dhyana and bhumisparsa mudras illustrated
the historic moment of the Buddha's declaration of his right
for enlightment.
This
large bronze is in the direct line of the Sinhalese-style
of the 14-15th century Siam Buddha. It exemplifies the significance
contribution of Chiang-saen; which was one of the most important
ancient cities of the Lana Kingdom established by King Saen
Pu 1328 AD. Although iconographically consistent with comparable
prototype, this large bronze Buddha has not been officially
dated. It is likely at 50 years of age; but we have no doubt
that it is a authentic fine casting originated from Thailand.
