An excellent Meiji period ivory netsuke of Hyottoko, a comic character in Kyogen plays; whose mask is distorted in representing perplexed peasants. As shown in the accurate rendering in this small netsuke, the Hyottoko mask is always distinguished with a squinting eye and a twisted mouth. The ivory has a beautiful cream white patina, and it's appears to be in excellent condition with no damage of any kind.
