A
very rare representation of Shiva, Lord of the Dance, in an unusual posture which
captures the grace and sinuous strength of the deity. In the twist of the torso,
the beautifully articulated limbs and serene face, the artist has registered power
in a virtuoso display of skill. An overlay of rich ornamentation complements the
simple rounded columns of the body. In the upraised hands are the drum, indicating
the creation, and a flame, which stands for the destruction of worlds. The right
hand touching the raised foot is a reminder of indestructibility of Being which,
like the foot suspended in air, is all-encompassing and non-dependent. The left
hand, usually seen in the “no fear” gesture, in this work drifts languidly toward
the ground. The relation of the details to the whole is perfectly balanced. Carving
is neither too broad nor is it overworked. In all a work of artistry, vitality,
dignity, movement. | |
