Japanese okimono in fine quality walrus ivory, with crystallized center material
visible; high translucency. Cream color, age patina, engraving with sumi in the
features, hairlines, and decorative motifs. Well carved depiction of Chokaro,
one of the eight Chinese Taoist Immortals who was believed to be the relative
of the Emperor. Chokwaro is identifiable by the gourd he carries, the abode of
his horse, which he can call upon at any time. In this lively carving, a cloud
rises from the opening of the gourd, atop which can be seen both Chokaro and his
steed, racing the wind.
