Here is a rare chance to acquire a significant relic from a turbulent yet artistically rich era in Japanese history. The hollow-core joined block statue was originally carved of Japanese cypress, meticulously finished with brushed lacquer and gilded gold, crystal inlaid for the ushnisha, and reverse-painted crystal inserts for his downcast eyes. The consecrated Buddha stands freely inside an original lacquer zushi bearing a sumi script that can be translated into "Tenso Emperor Eighth Years (1580), Made in the early Azuchi-Momoyama era." The Amida Butsuzo appears serene in a courteous mien, with his hands forming the welcoming to Pure Land Raigo-in mudra, signifying Amida's descent from heaven to greet faithful sentients in life and death. Despite the numerous rodent chew marks on the hems and pleats and flaking gold leaves on a five centuries-old surface, the figure's core remains solid, his facial features stay well-defined, and his life-like presence is untarnished, which affirms the Buddha's essence in the statue sanctified from the war-torn Muromachi period. The statue denotes the carver's intricate skill that exemplifies the artistic sophistication and opulence of the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
