Monju Bosatsu, also known as the Bodhisattva Manjushri, has been revered as the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, the God of Literature, and the savior of sentient beings since the 8th century Nara period in Japan. This Setomono depiction of Monju portrays him seated in a royal ease pose above a Snow Lion. Unlike the traditional depiction with a wisdom sword and lotus, the Guardian of Buddhist precepts is depicted as a scholar with a tranquil expression, eyes lowered, and holding a sutra scroll in reverence. The crackle glaze of this early Edo gilt porcelain statue is fired at high temperatures, followed by the application of lacquer and enamel, and then a low-temperature second firing to fuse into the glaze. As time passes, the rare enamel porcelain Monju Bosatsu on lion radiates with spiritual luminosity, growing ever more wondrous with age and a natural patina.
