A Bizen yaki okimono depicting a shishimai dancer dressed in the Lion Dance costume, standing on one foot above a rice bale, his hands holding a fan and a Wish-fulfilling Mallet (Uchide no Kozuchi 打ち出の小槌), performing an ancient ritual known as the Shishimai No Matsuri, celebrating the October harvest by warding off malevolent spirits and praying for a fruitful new year in an autumn festival. The animated stance of this sculpted okimono is delightfully realized with skills and artistry. The figure appears lively and playful in an intricate and dynamic composition. Close observation reveals a finely featured happy face underneath the ceremonial lion headgear. The dancer radiates with joy, conveying a spirit that effectively brings the figure and the festival to life. The vintage unglazed Bizen okimono has a silken surface and an unctuous ambiance with an ironlike hardness from two weeks of 1200°C firing. Signed "Bizen" in Kanji script, the shishimai dancer is attributed to the mid-Showa period in the 1950s'.
