Antique
Japanese Carved Netsuke
Black Skull
Charm Netsuke Signature:
unsigned, Early 20th Century H
0.9 in.(2.4cm), W 1 in.(2.5cm), D 0.7 in.(2cm)
Condition: very good! Though
reminiscent of death, skulls are said to be a sign of good luck, a charm to remind
us of the transience of life. Stained a rich brown, this ivory netsuke is precisely
sculpted, exposing the curves of the skull as would a book on anatomy. The piece
is tiny but revealing, carved through intricacies exposing detail such as minute
teeth, shadowy eye sockets, and prominent cheek bones. The stain is worn on a
few places, through which shines the original ivory color.
