Antique Tibetan Gilt Bronze Buddha
Shakyamuni
Seated with Medicine Bowl
Origin: Tibet, Circa: 18th-19th Century
H 12 in.(31cm), W 9.5 in.(21cm), D 6.3 in.(16cm)
Condition:
, o.a. excellent

This antique Tibetan gilt bronze is an exceptional find. The rare three-pointed crown is indicative that this Buddha is in his Sambhogakaya state as the transcendent Buddha or “enjoyment body” that represents the highest development of the Buddha’s speech. This bronze is especially weighted, an indication that a longer and more deliberated process was applied in the casting a process that requires greater degrees of mastery and skill from the artist.

Sold To Private Collection

The shorter countenance on the face and head indicates that this statue has a deeper Tibetan ethnic influence and is shaped by Indian gesture as opposed to the Chinese influences we see in later Tibetan statuary. The robes as is traditional for depictions of the Shakyamuni are simple, but gracious in their flow. Detail and ornamentation are instead left to the beautifully rendered trim and the sumptuous medicine bowl, shaped reminiscent of a full womb it is symbolically filled with swirled nectar that rejuvenates and heals. The bronze sits on a carved wood lotus base. This rare Tibetan antique bronze in excellent condition and a rare find, an object of power and beauty. (SD)
