Born from the gods' mouths as jets of fire, the Goddess Durga is one of the most magnificent of all personifications of Cosmic Energy. She represents the power of the Supreme Being that preserves moral order and truth in the universe. The name Durga means "The Unfathomable." She is also known by many other names such as Parvati, Ambika, and Kali; in the form of Parvati, she is the spouse of Shiva and is the mother of Ganesha and Karttikeya, and daughters Saraswati and Lakshmi. The Devi Goddess is venerated as our Divine Mother who protects mortals from evil and misery by destroying negative forces.

As depicted here in one of the most invoked forms of the Great Goddess, this vintage marble carving portrays Durga in her manifestation as the youthful deity in a compassionate countenance. She is seated sideways in royal ease on a snow lion, wearing a majestic conical crown, beautiful necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and tiara. In her main right hand, the goddess exhibits a no-fear abhayaprada mudra. The various attributes she once held, now missing, are a dagger (discrimination), a chakra (righteousness), a conch (happiness), a lotus (detachment), a bow (intention). The aged marble figure has a few crack lines. Despite its small size and imperfections, the omnipotent Eight-armed Goddess radiates with an awe-inspiring powerful presence.
