A sizable ceramic mask with bulging eyes and square open jaws, taunting the viewer with teeth bared in a snarl. Its distinctive oversized nose creates a perception of advancing force, capable of staring down hostile forces and subduing demons. The face of this long nose Tengu is lively, dynamic, and thoroughly spirited. Seriously funny, the large size made this mask an eye-catching wall-hanging for the doorway and an impressive centerpiece in the main room.

In Chinese astrology and myth, the sighting of the meteor Tengu 天狗 is the harbinger of war. Since it was transmitted to Japan in the 7th century, Tengu is gradually transformed into a beneficial bird spirit, and the metamorphose of the Shinto mountain deity Yama-No-Kami 山の神. The Tengu was once portrayed as the enemies of Buddhism. Over the centuries, the character of Tengu gradually evolved into many benevolent versions. The long-nose Hanataka Tengu 鼻高天狗 is noticeably wearing the wandering samurai Yamabushi's distinctive cap and monk robe. They have transformed into an avatar of the protective deities of homes and temples in Japan ever since.
