The Buddha of Infinite Light, Amida Nyorai, stands serenely before a leaf-shaped rolling cloud mandola. Dressed in symmetrical monk robes, he assumes a meditative posture atop a lotus pedestal, elevated above a spectacular assembly of seven intricate stacks. His hands are in the raigo-in and Varada mudras, welcoming the faithful to the Pure Land.
This illuminating Buddha is crafted from a Japanese cypress using the Yosegi-Zukuri 寄木造 technique, where joined blocks are meticulously assembled over a wooden core. The head and body are hollow-core constructions, a design innovation to prevent the development of cracks over time. Despite its age, the statue exhibits remarkable grace and artistry with minimal signs of wear and tear. Thus we can only conclude that the statue's surface was retouched at some point. This authentic Amida Nyorai shrine dates back to the Edo period in the 19th century.
