The Sea Spirit Shojo-Midare 猩々乱 is one of Japanese mythology's most famous legendary demon characters. As depicted here in this exquisite Meiji Takamakie carving decorated in lacquer and gold Hiramakie on a Roironuri ground, the figure is rendered in powerful angular contours with minute intricacy. The smiling-faced and red-haired drunker trickster comes to life in potent and graceful countenance as he sits with one foot set firmly beneath the foundation of his contentment-- a large saki jug in hand. The spirit and mystique of the character are keenly observed. It's an excellent example of the visceral potency and acumen of the work done in the Meiji period. The rare okimono has one thin surface crack and a few tiny nicks. Overall, it is in very good condition.
