A
crisply carved okimono depicting a fisherman with a crane on a lead, a scene from the traditional life of rural Japan. Cream colored ivory with sepia ink, straightforward in concept and excellent in the details, notably the rendering of the tied headcloth, the feathers and webbed feet of the crane, the finely rendered rope and fabric edges, patterned embroideries and longevity characters on the robe, the straw fisherman’s apron with its plaited edge, and the affable expression of the man coupled with a natural stance as he pauses for a puff of his pipe, toes gripping the rocks, create an appealing sense of realism.
