Famille Verte enameled over a white porcelain ground. It has a flared trumpet rim with two small pierced foliate handles modeled in the shape of fruits and leaves. A scholar appears to be conversing with an old woman in a hand-painted garden scene; next to them is a young boy grabbing a fowl with two hands. The setting is the story of the famous 4th-century calligrapher Wang Xizhi, who was known to love geese for their form and movements, which inspires the mastery of his calligraphy art. However, When an older woman heard that Xizhi is coming for a visit for her prized fowl, she mistakenly prepared a banquet to welcome the scholar by killing the goose. Xizhi's love for the goose is one of the "Four Love" Stories of the embodiment of the literati's life. Red Stamped in seal script inside a rectangular reserve: "Tongzi Year Made." There is glaze shrinkage and rubbing along the rim, evidently consistent for a 19th-century vase.
